Expedition Cruises

Expedition cruises offer a different way to experience the world, taking travellers to remote destinations, spectacular landscapes and fascinating regions that can be difficult to reach on a traditional holiday. From the icy wilderness of Antarctica and the Arctic to remote islands and rugged coastlines, expedition cruise holidays combine exploration, discovery and adventure. Unlike conventional cruise itineraries that often focus on major cities and popular tourist destinations, expedition cruises can venture into less-visited parts of the world. The journey itself becomes an important part of the experience, with opportunities to observe wildlife, discover remote communities and experience extraordinary natural environments. Whether you are interested in polar landscapes, wildlife, photography, nature or exploring somewhere different, an expedition cruise can provide a memorable way to discover the planet.

Why Choose an Expedition Cruise?

Expedition cruises are designed for travellers who want to experience destinations beyond the usual tourist routes. Rather than simply travelling between major ports, these cruises can focus on remote coastlines, islands, wilderness areas and unique natural environments. One of the attractions is the opportunity to see wildlife in its natural surroundings. Depending on the destination and season, expedition itineraries may provide opportunities to see animals such as penguins, whales, seals, polar bears and seabirds. The experience is not limited to what you see from the ship. Depending on the itinerary and local conditions, expedition cruises can include opportunities to go ashore or take part in activities designed to explore the surrounding environment.

Expedition cruising can therefore appeal to travellers looking for something more adventurous, educational and immersive than a conventional cruise holiday.

What to Expect from an Expedition Cruise Holiday

Expedition cruise ships are often designed with exploration in mind. Ships and facilities vary considerably, so it is important to check the details of the individual cruise before booking. Depending on the itinerary, an expedition cruise may include opportunities to explore destinations with specialist guides or expedition teams. These experts can provide information about local wildlife, geography, history and the environment. Some itineraries may also include activities such as shore landings, wildlife observation and nature-focused excursions. The exact activities available depend on the destination, weather, local regulations and conditions. Life onboard can also be an important part of the experience. You can relax between excursions, enjoy meals, attend presentations or simply watch the landscape from the ship. Because expedition cruises often visit remote areas, itineraries can be affected by weather and local conditions. Flexibility is therefore an important part of the expedition experience.

Popular Expedition Cruise Destinations

Expedition cruises operate in some of the world's most fascinating and remote regions.

Antarctica Cruises

Antarctica is one of the most distinctive expedition cruise destinations. Travellers can experience vast icy landscapes, dramatic coastlines and opportunities to observe Antarctic wildlife.

Depending on the itinerary and season, visitors may encounter penguins, seals, whales and a variety of seabirds.

Arctic Cruises

Arctic expedition cruises offer opportunities to explore northern landscapes and remote coastal regions. Depending on the itinerary, destinations can include areas around Greenland, Iceland, Svalbard and other Arctic regions.

Wildlife and landscapes are central to many Arctic experiences, although sightings and conditions cannot be guaranteed.

Greenland Cruises

Greenland offers dramatic scenery, remote communities and impressive Arctic landscapes. Expedition itineraries can provide opportunities to discover the country's coastline while learning about its natural and cultural heritage.

Galápagos and Wildlife Expeditions

Expedition cruises can also provide opportunities to explore wildlife-rich destinations beyond the polar regions. The Galápagos Islands are particularly known for their distinctive wildlife and protected natural environments.

Other expedition itineraries can explore remote islands, coastlines and nature-focused destinations around the world.

Choosing the Right Expedition Cruise Holiday

Choosing an expedition cruise requires careful consideration of the destination and the type of experience you want.

Destination: Decide whether you are interested in polar landscapes, wildlife, remote islands, cultural experiences or other types of adventure.

Itinerary: Examine the destinations and planned activities carefully. Expedition itineraries can differ significantly from one another.

Season: Many expedition destinations have specific seasons when conditions are suitable for travel. Check the available dates for your chosen destination.

Ship: Expedition ships can vary in size, facilities and onboard atmosphere. Consider which type of ship suits your preferences.

Accommodation: Compare available cabin categories, including their location, size and facilities.

Activities: Check which excursions and activities are included or available during the cruise.

Travel arrangements: Some expedition cruises require flights or additional travel to reach the embarkation port. Consider the complete journey when comparing options.

Flexibility: Remote destinations are affected by weather and environmental conditions. Be prepared for itinerary changes where necessary.

These factors can help you compare expedition cruise holidays and select an itinerary that matches your interests.

Expedition Cruises from the UK

For UK travellers, expedition cruises can involve different departure arrangements depending on the destination. Some itineraries may depart from European ports, while others require flights to more distant embarkation points. Fly-cruise packages can provide a convenient way to combine flights with an expedition cruise, particularly for destinations such as Antarctica or the Arctic. When comparing expedition cruises from the UK, consider the departure airport, flights, transfers, cruise duration and overall itinerary. Check exactly what is included in your chosen holiday before booking.
